Holy cow! Great video lotta detail that I needed as a beginner forager. I appreciate all the safety tips. Thank you, brother.
Hi, thank you for this video. At the end, when you sauteed and ate them, were these mushrooms boiled first? Or just cleaned and sauteed before being eaten? I'm wondering if they should always be boiled before sauteing or not? TY! 🙂
@cynthiafreeman4543 I have never boiled them.... just clean and sautéed. I only eat fresh fruiting bodies. Hope that helps, and thanks for watching.
I found one yesterday on a tree that was solid white, and has quite a bit of moisture. How long does it normally take to ripen?
Three or four days, depending on the weather... sometimes a little longer. Hopefully, the fly will stay away until then. It seems we are always racing to beat the bugs.
While hiking on Aug 1st, I found a huge, beautiful, orange mushroom on the side of an oak tree. I thought it might be chicken of the woods. On Aug 3rd, I felt confident to give it a try. I went back to cut off a piece and every last bit was gone.
Yeah... it's a race against the bugs, wildlife, and yes, other people. Now that you feel confident, I'm sure you'll find another flush soon. Thanks for watching, and happy hunting to ya!!
@@WildMeatLetsEat Thank you! I appreciate & respect you content & the knowledge that you are sharing. I even subbed to continue picking up some good stuff! TY
Today, on a walk, for the first time in my life, I saw two of these. I guess googel was paying attention, because I took a picture, then at home this vid pops up....
This is one of the best videos I have watched. It makes me feel more confident in what I need to do when foraging this type of mushroom. But I still have more questions to be answered. Should they be completely orange? The ones we harvested are not.
No, not necessarily... each flush will very in their orange color. A younger flush tends to have more yellow or pink/white on the outer margins but changes as the mushroom fully develops. If you go to my channel page, there's a lot of different chicken of the woods vids that should help you understand the different stages. I hope that helps, and thanks for watching!!
How often do you find these beauties??
Sping, summer, and fall.
Coffee looked good big hoss
Thank you for being so informative and providing advice. Such a great video.
I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching, and happy hunting to ya!!
Found a glorious one growing on a plum tree where a limb had broken off. Wondering if its safe to eat?
Yes
Yeah resinous polypore is so savory and delicious I want to find some to eat it and make stock.
very informative!! thank you
@changliu3356 thank you, and thanks for watching!
Mushroom Mindfulness!!👏🏆
I use your recipe, I enjoy it. Thanks
So what do we use it for? And how much?
Just picked my first one. Sautéed up about a 4 square inch piece in butter. Holy crap, it's amazing. Hopefully I have no negative reactions to it, I really want to eat a bigger portion tomorrow
@@dizzious Awesome! Enjoy, I bet you'll be just fine if you've had no problems with the smaller pieces.
Love mushroom huntin' and chicken of the woods. Subscribed!
and what about the mushrooms that are still on the fat stage do you harvest them or leave them to grow into clusters?
I do leave them to grow a little... there's a fine line when harvesting the young ones.
Great stuff. Thanks. Is there a reason to dry it if you're going to use it within a day or 2?
@@hogue3666 no... the only reason I dry it is for storage.
Just now found this mushroom for the first time this evening. Thanks for the video!
เห็ดชนิดนี้ทานได้ไหมคะ
Any mushroom can be eaten. The right question is; should it be eaten...❤❤❤❤
เห็ดชนิดนี้ทานได้ไหมคะ
Just cooked a bunch last night. Super yummy until it all came out both ends. :(
Everything I’ve read says since cherry is a hardwood you can eat it from a cherry tree. Was that a mistake saying you can’t?
No, not a mistake... however, you can eat it from a cherry tree... I don't. However, I know plenty of people who have had no problems when found on a cherry tree. Years ago, when I first started mushroom hunting, I was taught to avoid any tree that blooms... keep in mind that field guides and old timers were the most prevalent way to learn. With there being roughly 26 verities of COW, there's a lot of variables. COW is a beginner mushroom, and most beginners don't know that. Blanket statements are used to ensure safety. Cherry tree leaves can be toxic if ingested... the leaves contain cyanogenic glycosides and can release hydrogen cyanide if consumed in large amounts. We know that COW can absorb the oils, for example, a eucalyptus tree, and become toxic. So is it possible the oils from a cherry tree can do the same thing... I don't know, but it certainly seems reasonable to me. Can you eat COW from a cherry tree... yes. I think the better question is, should you. With any wild mushroom, it's better to be safe. I hope that helps, and thanks for watching!!
Thanks for that differentiation…Resin secretion verified. Have never seen COTW around here. We’ve had alot of rain all week but nothing to cool off into even the upper 60’s at night. Still have an acre of chanterelles to pick next to the house so I’m happy…How far south have you heard of them being found? Thanks again!
@neila.4289 Georgia is the furthest I heard of... however, it would not surprise me if they were found in Florida.
No microwave!!! It nukes all nutrients.
❤
Great video, best I’ve seen yet for practical advice
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it... thanks for watching, and happy hunting to ya!!
So just to make sure I understand: you can keep any parts that are black stained on it when you cook and eat right? Or should I cut them off when preparing
When you harvest them, cut, clean, and trim... they will start to turn black. I usually eat them the same day I harvest... the longer you wait, the darker they get. Yes... it's almost impossible to eat them before turning black. The bruising will not hurt you... it's not esthetically pleasing, but it's okay to eat. Thanks for watching, and happy hunting to ya!!
Thanks for your info on the turkey tail also. Just harvested that off an old oak here in North Texas yesterday and now search out the Reishi!
Outstanding Reishi specimen. Ganoderms and Polypores in general are the best.
How much mushrooms vs water ratio? Thank you 😊
do you make a double extraction? mixing the tea & tincture?
Does it ever grow to the point that it goes bad? I just harvested some super fresh TT but it had mold underneath the upper layers on a cut stump that had 3 layers & was multi colored.
Yes, it can be too old... I would avoid any TT with mold on the fruiting body. Mold is your enemy when it comes to mushrooms. Sometimes, it will be brittle with no mold... that would be another time to pass... too old. Fresh is always best. I hope that helps, and thanks for watching!
can you harvest later in the year or only in autumn when they grow?????.... and when in tincture how often and how many drops please🙏❤
hmm i wonder if drying the turkey tail and then making a powder out of it is better for making tea so we get more nutrients out of it but probably would be harsher on the taste
woot!
Great video thank you
I like the informative video and hes easy on the eye😂
How much and how often do you drink this? Straight from the little bottle?
I only take 6ml... about one dropper, once or twice a day, depending on how I feel.
Great video! How long can you store the turkey tail once picked? And the proper way to do so?
Thanks. Just dehydrated or oven dry, and it will last a year or two. Keep in mind that moisture is the enemy... they'll keep a long time if the moisture is removed. I hope that helps, and thanks for watching!
@@WildMeatLetsEat that’s perfect thank you for the info!!!
Just found one yesterday, that I’m pretty sure is Chicken of the woods, but it’s growing out of the ground, on an oak flat. There’s a dead log about a foot away though. Always been more of a hunter than a gatherer, so I haven’t spent much time or effort picking mushrooms. Just curious what your thoughts are.
Is it more of a pink color with a white underside? Look up, chicken of the woods cincinnatus... see if that looks like what you found. It looks like it's growing out of the ground, but it's really growing from a tree roots. I hope that helps, and thanks for watching!!
Unrelated to this video , do you have any experience with burdock root ? Tincture or tea ? Also the other night I ran low on past blue ribbon beer and I thought to myself, well you know my mushroom tincture have alcohol in them so why not take a swig. To make a long story short , I woke the next morning with a strange white web like substance covering my head and an unusual desire to seek out a mossy place in the woods and take a nap .I guess I may have overdone the previous night a bit . thanks, Mark
If you find it black on the bottom, on the spore side, couldn't you just cut it away and continue with the process? thanks heaps for the vid ❤. you're really funny as well 😊
Thanks for watching. In theory, you could cut it off. I would try to find a fresh specimen. Any mold or blackness on the polypore could be dangerous for consumption... in my opinion it's best to avoid. I hope that helps and happy hunting to ya!
great video when is best time to forage for them and how much extract do you take daily, or how much and how often
For the most part, you can find them year-round depending on the weather. January and February can be tough, but you can find them. I take 6ml under the tongue once or twice a day, depending on how I feel. Hope that helps, and thanks for watching!!
@@WildMeatLetsEat thank you
I learned something new today. Thanks!!! Great vid!!
You're welcome, and thanks for watching!!
Pretty cool he has 100 proof in a gallon jug... Just sayin
Looks amazing are these chanterals?
Morels 😁
I've been looking all weekend! Nothing but ticks. Lots and lots and lots of ticks! Nice haul!
Ticks suck
@@georgeervin7311 you're not kidding. I plucked 7 off me today after my hunt. That seems a bit high for this early in the season. Looks like this is going to be a bad year for them. At least here in Michigan.
Just curious... is the gound temperature warm enough in Michigan? You might be a little early... I'm not sure.
@@WildMeatLetsEat I don't think it is yet. People have been saying they have found a couple here and there but it's not really good timing. I know I'm out way too early but I'm very impatient!!
@sararenee7487 I get it... I do the same thing, check all my favorite spots early. However, it usually pays off. Good luck and happy hunting!
Bring em over to ky you can't eat all them
Oh man... they're gone! They don't last long in my house.
Same man I got the 81 last year found 71 so far happy hunting brother
